License by Reciprocity

Many contractors are confused about the terms, "Reciprocity" and "Endorsement". Unaware of what these words actually mean and how they are used in the licensing process cause many to become frustrated and give up on the possibility of becoming state licensed.

Today we will review these terms, discuss their possibilities and hinderances as well as dive-in to our extended discussion on state reciprocity procedures beginning with the great state of North Carolina.

Webster's Dictionary defines the term reciprocity as a situation or relationship in which two people or groups agree to do something similar for each other, to allow each other to have the same rights, etc. : a reciprocal arrangement or relationship. Similarly, the word, endorsement is defined as a public or official statement of support or approval. In essence, the terms "reciprocity" and "endorsement" mean the same thing for state contractors. Both words refer to a contractors ability to use his state license to gain licensure in another state without having to sit for that state's trade exam.

However, what most people fail to recognize when considering reciprocity is that you must meet all other requirements listed by the state to obtain licensure. For most states this even includes taking the state's Business and Law exam.

Although, South Carolina applicants are required to submit a take-home exam, North Carolina is unique in the fact that a business and law exam is not required when seeking reciprocity. Additional requirements include:

  • Audited Financial Statements for classifications over $500,000
  • A Certificate of Authority filed with the Secretary of State
  • Complete application showing experience qualifications

Currently, North Carolina has a reciprocity agreement with the following states:
